Two Missing Hikers Rescued in Arroyo Canyon, Angeles National Forest

On Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at approximately 11 p.m., the Montrose Search and Rescue Team were called to the Switzer Falls, Angeles National Forest, to search for two missing hikers. A daughter of one of the missing persons called Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station and reported the hikers missing after they failed to answer her calls and did not show up for dinner.

Rescuing deputies found one of the missing person's vehicle in the parking lot of the Switzer Falls' picnic area.

The volunteer members of the Sheriff's Montrose Search and Rescue team responded to Switzer Falls, Angeles National Forest. Once the team arrived on scene, field team one deployed down Reds Trail to the bottom of the Arroyo Canyon. Once at the bottom, they heard a male who told them he was stuck on the hillside approximately two to three hundred feet off the canyon floor. Team members realized how steep and rugged the terrain was and requested Sheriff's Air Rescue to assist.

The man also told deputies his brother was approximately one mile up the trail. Confirming the first victim was not injured and was in a secure spot on the hillside, other deputies continued up the canyon in search for the second victim. Sheriff's Rescue Air 7 assisted in the search; however, due to the weather and vast search area, they were unable to locate him.

Meanwhile, Sheriff's Air Rescue 5 responded to the initial location and hoisted the first victim and deputies to safety.

Deputies located the second victim a short time later, and directed Sheriff's Air Rescue 5 to his location for an air extraction. The victim was slightly dehydrated, and very tired.

Both victims were airlifted to mile marker 27.30 on Angeles Crest Highway. Both victims refused medical treatment by the Air 5 deputy paramedics and were released.
