Bear captured in Montrose

Crescenta Valley Station received a call at 7:22 am this morning, September, 9, 2012, regarding an approximately 300 pound Black Bear that was seen in the area of Henrietta Avenue and La Crescenta Avenue. The bear slowly moved his way south down La Cresenta Avenue and was spotted at different locations such as Santa Carlotta Street, Fairmount Avenue and then on the football field at Crescenta Valley High School. A "reverse 911" call was delivered at 8:40 am hours to all the residence in that area to stay inside their houses and to keep their pets inside. The bear then moved to the 210 freeway and crossed back and forth several times. To ensure the safety of the bear and with the help of California Highway Patrol and Glendale PD, the 210 freeway was shut down for approximately 10 minutes until the bear moved further south and off the freeway. The deputies monitored the bear's location until the arrival of three officers from the Department of Fish and Game.

The Fish and Game Warden arrived at 9:05 am and worked together with the deputies to corral the bear into a spot where it could be safely tranquilized. The bear was shot twice with a tranquilizer gun at the corner of Hermosa Avenue and Sunset Avenue in Montrose. The bear was then safely loaded into their truck to be tagged and taken back into the forest.

There were no injuries and no property damage during this incident. Another "reverse 911" call was delivered at 10:20 am to advise the community that the bear had been captured and it was safe to return to their normal activities.
