On March 26, 2013, Jane Addams Middle School located at 4535 West 153rd Place, Lawndale had a Career Day for their students. Personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, South Los Angeles Station/Lawndale Service Center and the City of Lawndale Code Enforcement were invited to the event. The students learned what it takes to have a career in law enforcement. They were able to ask numerous questions that they normally would not be able to ask law enforcement officers.
City of Lawndale Code Enforcement Supervisor Debbie Holland spoke about the importance of education when choosing a career in law enforcement. School Resource Deputy Troy Hilliard told the students about his experiences on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Lieutenant John Hocking showed the students some of the equipment that deputies use on a daily basis.
Career Day allowed the students to interact with positive adult role models, increase their knowledge of career opportunities, take part in motivational learning activities, and prepare for their futures.
