On April 11, 2013, the Lawndale Rotary Club held their "Firefighter and Deputy of the Year" luncheon at the Lawndale Community Center. A deputy and a firefighter who currently work in the city of Lawndale were eligible for the award. Deputy Troy Hilliard from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, South Los Angeles Station/Lawndale Service Center was honored with the award. Los Angeles County Firefighter Paramedic Robert Currier was also honored with the award.
Deputy Hilliard is a 16 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He started his career as a Custody Assistant working in the jail. He then graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Academy and worked his first assignment as a deputy at the North County Correctional Facility in the city of Saugus. He transferred to Lennox Sheriff's Station which has been renamed South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station. For the past six years, he has worked for the City of Lawndale as a School Resource Deputy. He has sat on the Student Attendance Review Board, School Safety Council and has been influential in developing school safety plans.
When asked what he likes the most about being a deputy, Deputy Hilliard said, "I like being a positive role model for all of the school children I protect on a daily basis."
