DEPUTIES TALK JUMPER OFF ROOF AT LAC+USC HOSPITAL

On Friday August 9th, 2013, at approximately 2229 hours, a call was received at LAC+USC Hospital of a person on the roof and about to jump off. Deputy personnel were dispatched to the location and observed a distraught mentally ill male Hispanic adult pacing back and forth on the ledge of the building approximately 70 feet high off the ground. Deputy personnel quickly evacuated the area and called for the Fire Department.

Deputy personnel then went up to the roof to make contact with the man who had now positioned himself in a seated position on the ledge with his legs dangling over the side of the building. He told deputy personnel he was going to jump off the roof. He said he wanted to kill himself because everyone else wanted him dead. He kept leaning over the edge as deputy personnel made contact with him opening a dialogue and building a rapport which eventually convinced the man to come down off the ledge and onto the roof. The man was escorted into the Hospital and admitted on a 72 Hr. psychiatric hold without any further incident.
