Eight teenage boys and Four teenage girls spent three-hours as inmates at Industry Station's Jail on September 12th, 2013 while they participated in a diversion program called "Solutions."
Similar to the "scared straight" program, this phase of the "Solutions" program takes at-risk youths through the initial arrest and booking process of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
After the jail has been cleared of all Los Angeles County Jail Inmates, the at-risk teens are "arrested", transported, searched, and temporarily housed in actual cells within the Industry Station jail.
"This process provides these young men and women a time to reflect on what their lives could be like if they make the wrong choices." Industry Sheriff's Station Captain Timothy Murakami said. "Although it's only a short amount of time, those cell walls and fluorescent lights really do make people reflect on choices they made. By exposing our youths to this aspect of the criminal lifestyle, hopefully the image of the cell and the criminal booking process will imprint in their memory, and they reflect on their experience before they make a bad decision."
"Solutions" is a multi-step diversion program created by the Industry Sheriff's Station, in partnership with several Los Angeles County universities, to help find solutions and strategies for families struggling with teen conflicts and their destructive behaviors. In addition to intervention programs established for these at-risk youths, parents whose children participate in the program simultaneously attend a 10 week parenting program which is taught by "Solutions" trained deputies. "The parental component of our program gives these parents the tools and resources they need in order to effect a change in their parenting style" says Program Director Sergeant Toni Calton. "This in turn allows parents to adapt and better supervise their strong-willed child."
The "Solutions" program aims to demonstrate to at-risk teens that poor life choices lead to a destructive lifestyle, and there are alternatives to joining gangs, committing crimes, and using drugs and alcohol.
"Solutions" is open and free to all families with children in grades six through nine who feel they can benefit from the course.
