COPS Bureau, County Health Youth Tobacco Sting

On January 13, 2014, the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Bureau, along with the County Public Health Department, conducted a Youth Tobacco Sales Enforcement Operation in the unincorporated East Los Angeles area. The purpose of this operation was to ensure business owners were complying with state laws governing the sale of various tobacco products to minors.

COPS Bureau deployed personnel, who were under the age of 18 years old, an attempt to purchase tobacco products from business. Twenty-five locations were checked for compliance in the East Los Angeles area. Three of locations were found to have violated state laws, and were cited.

Recently, much emphasis has been placed on the reduction of youth tobacco use. Programs have been produced and promoted in schools, and throughout the media in an attempt to curtail tobacco use by teenagers. COPS Bureau and the County Health Department, continue to work in partnership to enforce laws that prohibit the use of tobacco products by underage youth.
