This year the Compton Station Youth Activities League (YAL) was fortunate to take 11 deserving YAL members, 6 teen boys and 5 teen girls to the University of California at Santa Cruz for a 4 day college preparatory workshop.
The workshop titled "Life After High School" included 200 youth from across the state coming from various Police Activities League centers. Students were housed in college dorms as well as received college preparatory workshops. They had the opportunity to experience what it would be like to live as college students.
The students learned about every aspect of planning for their future college careers. The workshops consisted of college finances, requirements to graduate from high school, college entrance requirements, filling out college applications, campus life, choosing a career, resume/interview preparation, social media/safety, and life skills to name a few.
The sponsors of the trip included the Sheriff's Youth Foundation and various community organizations. This is an annual event and was the highlight of some of the YAL participants. Additionally, the Compton YAL has recently collaborated with the City of Compton and received additional funding and staff. This summer has been probably the most active summer for the up to 150 youth that attended daily. Due to the additional resources, area youth were able to visit places like Raging Waters, Tanaka Farms, The Santa Monica Pier and The California Science Center.
For information on how your child can participate in YAL activities please contact Deputies Munoz or Harkless at (310) 668-4203, or visit the center at: 700 N. Alameda St. Compton CA 90221 (M-F 3:00-6:30 PM)
