South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station Detectives filed felony kidnapping charges in Torrance Superior Court earlier today against 21 year old Christopher Smith of Inglewood.
Smith was arrested by South Los Angeles Station Deputies on Monday October 8, 2012, after he allegedly stole a pick-up truck with a two year old child inside as it sat parked and running outside of a residence in Lawndale. The father of the child had momentarily returned inside of the residence in order to retrieve some personal items when the theft/kidnapping occurred. Because of the age of the child, Smith, who is currently on probation, faces a minimum of 5 years in prison if convicted.
Although it is never a good idea to leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for just a matter of seconds, there is no evidence the child's father acted in a negligent manner and he will not be facing any charges.
