Deputies Investigate Explosion in Canyon Country Apartment Building

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station responded to an explosion at an apartment in the 17700 block of Scherzinger Lane. As a result of the explosion, a Male white adult was transported to the hospital with severe burns. Another male white adult was later arrested for cultivation of marijuana and manufacturing a controlled substance.

The explosion caused significant damage to the entire three unit building displacing two other families. The building was red tagged until the damage can be assessed. Detectives from the Arson Explosives Detail responded to the scene to ensure that there was no additional dangerous material at the home.

Sheriff's Narcotic's Bureau Detectives determined the residence where the explosion occurred was being used as a marijuana grow house and a T.H.C. extraction laboratory.

No information is available on the male transported to the hospital.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

Numerous apartments have been evacuated in the 17700 block of Scherzinger Lane in Canyon Country after tenants reported an explosion at approximately 2:45 p.m. this afternoon. Arriving deputies discovered possible narcotics and fireworks inside an apartment.

Deputies are still on-scene, and the eastern side of the Mountain View Apartments have been evacuated. The Los Angeles County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Squad, along with Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Arson Explosives personnel are at the scene. The investigation is on-going and a perimeter has been established. We ask that residents have patience as this investigation proceeds. Residents will be allowed back into the area as soon as the location has been rendered safe. There has not been any injuries reported and the residents in the affected area have been evacuated.
