AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - February was plagued with wind and even an earthquake that was centered just 6 miles east of Avalon. Seven small craft advisories and 2 gales warnings were forecast with some beautiful winter weather in between. The first weekend of the month had calm seas and temperatures in the 60s bringing some most welcome boating visitors including a small group from Balboa Yacht Club.
The next weekend was nice as well, starting out with extremely calm wind conditions. Fortunately, on the 11th, the wind picked up for the Bahia Corinthian Bogart Series race with the 18 boats beginning to arrive from Newport around 2pm. Horizon Yacht Club also visited that weekend with 13 boats. Membership in Horizon Yacht Club is limited to owners of "Blue Water Vessels", or boats that can safely cross the San Pedro Channel to Catalina. Horizon members are frequent and welcome visitors to the island.
The first visit of the month for the "Inspiration" was plagued with rain and Southwest winds measured up to 41 mph. The weather did not succeed in hampering the spirits of the passengers who seemed to enjoy the "E Ticket" ride on the shore-boats to and from the cruise ship as much as the tours they took! Their next visit, Valentine's Day, was a much nicer day and appropriate on that day to visit the "Island of Romance."
Weather and attendance were good this year for the 31st Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup held on Saturday, February 25th.
