Temple Station Mounted Posse and Youth Activity League to Teach Duarte Youth about Horsemanship.

The Temple Station Mounted Posse will be teaching students from the Temple Station Youth Activity League about horses on Saturday May 18, 2013 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.

Deputy Art Valenzuela from the Temple Station Youth Activity League will bring 15 students to the West Covina Public Equestrian Center (located at 350 South Citrus, West Covina (626) 965-0236) where they will be taught horse safety and grooming and then get to ride the horses.

Temple Station Posse members will teach Students horse safety and how to groom a horse. Each student will be fitted with a safety helmet and assigned a horse and instructor. In addition to the instructor, there will be two additional Posse members assisting with each student. After the morning lessons, students are shown how to put the saddle and bridle on the horse and then they get to ride their assigned horse. Posse members will guide the horse from the ground while teaching the students how to control the horse. There will be obstacles such as a serpentine course and key-hole which will help develop the students' skills at maneuvering the horse.

After the riding is done, students will receive a commemorative horseshoe plaque with a picture of themselves on their horse. A taco lunch will also be provided for the students.

The Temple Station Youth Activity League is located in Pamela Park, Duarte. The Youth Activity League provides a safe haven for students during the afterschool hours. The students are assisted with homework and participate in sports activities. The Youth Activity League is operated by Temple Station Deputy Art Valenzuela.

The Temple Station, Mounted Posse is made up of six reserve Sheriff Deputies who have completed the Sheriff's Department Reserve Academy and 12 mounted Civilian Volunteers. In addition to patrols, they spend many hours training with their horses. They volunteer their time to patrol the equestrian trails in Whittier Narrows, the bike path and parks in Duarte, and several shopping center parking lots in the cities of Duarte, Temple City, and Rosemead during the holiday season. Mounted patrol offers the ability to access areas that patrol cars cannot and is a very beneficial crime prevention tool in the shopping centers.
