Burglary is on the rise in cities throughout Southern California, including here in Pico Rivera. In 2012, the number of reported burglaries in the city increased from the previous year.
Many of these burglaries occurred simply because doors or windows weren't locked. Thirty percent of burglaries from vehicles involved unlocked doors, while more than half of home burglaries were the result of doors and windows that were left open or unlocked.
In response to this drastic increase in burglary crimes, the City of Pico Rivera is implementing "Hide It. Lock It. Or Lose It." Modeled after a similar effort in Dana Point, the campaign is designed to educate and remind residents of the simple steps they can take to protect themselves and their families from becoming a victim of burglary.
On Saturday, June 1st, Lieutenant Steve Sanchez and Mayor Gustavo Camacho, along with volunteers and staff from the City of Pico Rivera and the Sheriff's station, spoke to residents at the Wal-Mart in Pico Rivera about protecting themselves from becoming victims of property crime.
Actively protecting yourself from theft is simple and only takes a few seconds, such as hiding or concealing electronic accessories, such as chargers, in your car, never leaving your valuables or electronics inside your car, and always locking your car and home when you leave it unattended.
Reducing crime in our community requires everyone's involvement. In addition to following the tips above, residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Pico Rivera Station, by calling 562-949-2421. Callers can remain anonymous if they like.
