Inmates Use Program to Control Anger and Resolve Conflict

SMARTS, Self-Motivated Anger Release Tools & Strategies, is a results-based program designed to help inmates identify anger and teach them how to handle conflicts.

The program was designed by Michael J. Speakman, who is a licensed Substance Abuse Counselor and Anger Education coach. His hands-on workbook program is now being taught throughout Los Angeles County jails.

SMARTS courses are taught by deputies and custody assistants assigned to the Century Regional Detention Facility, as well as LA Works facilitators. The facilitators bring many styles to captivate the attention of his or her audience through lecture, non-verbal acting, reflection and discussion.

"The participants are challenged to evaluate past abusive behaviors, create goals for recovery behavior, demonstrate the will and motivation to modify behavior, and accept responsibility for future actions," said LA Works facilitator, Mr. Carvajal.
