Lawndale Health Safety and Pet Fair

On Saturday, June 22, 2013, the City of Lawndale held their 2013 Lawndale Health Safety and Pet Fair in front of the Lawndale Community Center, 14700 Burin Avenue, Lawndale, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was part of it.

The event was extremely successful. Families brought their pets to the event and were able to learn about health and safety issues. They were able to get their dogs licensed and vaccinated. Some of the pets included, dog, cats, rats, birds, snakes just to name a few. There were also displays with parrots, snakes, chameleons, iguanas, an owl and a petting zoo. The Los Angeles County Fire Department had a classroom earthquake simulator, where children could experience a simulated earthquake.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department had several booths at the event. South Los Angeles Station/Lawndale Service Center had a police car that children were allowed to sit in while parents took pictures. There was crime prevention literature, along with neighborhood watch information. On display was Sheriff's Department safety equipment which children were allowed to try on. The Sheriff's Department Posse was also on hand with one of their police horses. A Sheriff's Department street race car and off-road race car was a big hit.

One of the many highlights of the day was when two Sheriff's Department bomb detection K-9s, Deputy Maus and Deputy Maselli put on a live demonstration, showing how the bomb dogs are able to find explosive devices. The deputies concealed bomb making material in one of the planters and in front of 40 plus spectators. Both dogs were able to locate the device to the cheers of the spectators.

The Lawndale Mayor, City Council Members, City Manager, and numerous city employees were all present to make this event a wonderful day for everyone that attended.

We would like to thank the City of Lawndale for hosting the event, and to the Sheriff's Department personnel that donated their time to bring out their race cars, horse and canines.
