EBI's Community Transition Unit hosts first alliance meeting

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Education Based Incarceration Bureau's (EBI), Community Transition Unit (CTU) hosted its First Sheriff's Community Alliance Meeting at the California Endowment Center.

The Sheriff's Community Alliance is a collaboration of community and faith based organizations that have come together to assist and support the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in optimizing successful reentry services to the jail population upon their release. This process begins with the CTU staff conducting a needs and risk assessment of inmates participating within the Sheriff's various custodial programs. The assessment includes measuring an inmate's motivation and commitment to positive change. A transitional plan is then developed matching the inmate's specific needs to a community-based provider that addresses those needs. Community linkages may include substance abuse services, mental health and medical needs, employment, education, family reunification, domestic violence and tattoo removal. Transportation may also be provided directly from the County jail to the community provider assigned to the inmate.

The LASD's CTU currently partners with a myriad of community-based organizations dedicated to building a positive, comprehensive network of reentry services that address the holistic needs of the target population. One of the goals of the Community Alliance is to expand and organize this network to become the driving force helping former inmates transition to becoming an integral part of society. Join us in promoting a continuum of community-based services that will offer alternatives to incarceration and positive community integration.

If you are the administrator of a community human services agency and would like to get further information about joining the Sheriff's Community Alliance, please feel free to contact the Community Transition Unit.
