Los Angeles County Sheriff's Helicopter, Air Rescue 5, responded to and ultimately rescued two injured hikers in the Angeles National Forest.

The above shown rescue occurred at Eaton Falls, with a male adult from Pasadena, California, falling eighty feet and landing on the canyon floor. He sustained moderate trauma injuries and was treated by Emergency Services Detail paramedics and hoisted into the aircraft.

The Emergency Services Detail (ESD) operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to their tactical training, all ESD Deputies are certified paramedics and rescue divers.

ESD is responsible for coordinating and participating in mountain search and rescue, underwater search and rescue, and swift water and flood rescue operations for the Sheriff's Department. They staff the Air Rescue 5 Helicopter, the Ocean Rescue Boat, and accompany the Special Weapons Teams on all operations.

ESD also maintains two Reserve companies assigned to its command. The Medical Company consists of doctors and medical specialists available to work with the Air-5 crew on busy weekends and major holidays. The Marine Dive Company consists of boat operators, marine technicians and underwater operations specialists who can assist with marine operations.

LASD Reserve Deputy Program: Those interested in receiving additional information on the Reserve Program may contact their nearest Sheriff's or Police Station.

Did you know? There are over 850 Reserve Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies who work for $1 per year to serve their communities. They work patrol, jails, Search and Rescue, motorcycle patrol, mounted posse, investigations, and more, as respected team members of the second largest policing agency in the nation: www.RFB.lasd.org

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs supplement the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's law enforcement staffing. Like full-time Sheriff's Deputies, Reserve Deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. Since Reserve Deputies have the same powers of arrest as full-time deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as full-time deputies.

Uniform Reserves are assigned to one of the many Sheriff's Department patrol stations or units and perform general law enforcement duties, including crime prevention, investigation, responding to calls, traffic control, and enforcement of laws.

There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff's deputies.
