Attorney General Commendation Award

Attorney General Commendation Awards Presented to: Deputy Raymundo Wilson, Reserve Deputy Walter Andrew, Explorer Nicholas Hicks, Palmdale Sheriff's Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

On March 21, 2012, Palmdale Sheriff's Station receiVed a call regarding a man trapped underneath a vehicle that had fallen off a jack. Deputy Raymundo Wilson and his ride-along, Explorer Nicholas Hicks of Palmdale, arrived at the location at the same time as Reserve Deputy Walter Andrew.

The trio rushed into the open garage and located the victim, who was pinned under the engine block of a vehicle that had its front tires removed. They saw the man was semiconscious and struggling to breathe. Without hesitation, Deputy Wilson and Reserve Deputy Andrew took hold of the front bumper and lifted the vehicle with all the strength they could muster while Explorer Hicks repositioned the fallen jack. They immediately used the jack to lift the car up high enough for them to pull the victim out from underneath the car.

The victim was transported to a hospital and treated in the emergency room. According to the attending physician, the man received extensive injuries and would have suffocated had it not been for the trios' quick actions.

LASD Reserve Deputy Program: Those interested in receiving additional information on the Reserve Program may contact their nearest Sheriff's or Police Station.

Did you know? There are over 850 Reserve Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies who work for $1 per year to serve their communities. They work patrol, jails, Search and Rescue, motorcycle patrol, mounted posse, investigations, and more, as respected team members of the second largest policing agency in the nation: www.RFB.lasd.org

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs supplement the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's law enforcement staffing. Like full-time Sheriff's Deputies, Reserve Deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. Since Reserve Deputies have the same powers of arrest as full-time deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as full-time deputies.

Uniform Reserves are assigned to one of the many Sheriff's Department patrol stations or units and perform general law enforcement duties, including crime prevention, investigation, responding to calls, traffic control, and enforcement of laws.

There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff's deputies.
