CRDF Hosts Its First Inmate Family and Community Program meeting

On September 16th, 2013, Century Regional Detention Facility held its first Inmate Family and Community Program meeting. Captain Joseph Nunez, along with Sheriff Lee Baca and representatives from various units within the facility, hosted inmate family members in an open forum in which attendees could make queries, express their concerns, and learn more about our facility and its programs.

Supervisors from our medical, mental health, community transition, legal, food services, religious/volunteers services, and EBI units were present to speak directly to members of the public. The focus of the meeting was a discussion of inmate welfare and the expansion of programs that focus on preparing inmates educationally, socially, and vocationally for re-entry into society.

Sheriff Baca spoke to attendees and answered questions on education for the incarcerated, and shared his vision of an inmate population that will "leave our jails as better people than when they came in." His sentiment was shared and reinforced by Captain Nunez and Commander Johnson.

Members of the public were able to sign up for the meeting by sending a request to askthecaptain.CRDF@lasd.org, an e-mail that is part of the Ask the Captain program at CRDF. This program was launched in August to provide inmate family members the opportunity to have their concerns addressed in a direct and timely manner. Through this e-mail, those who wished to attend the meeting had their attendance confirmed and were given the chance to forward any questions regarding specific inmates.

Upon the conclusion of the meeting, many attendees sent words of praise and appreciation to Captain Nunez for his innovative idea, and expressed gratitude for the increased accessibility to inmate and facility information.
