Sheriff's Mounted Posse
"Over 150 Years of Service"
Back in 1850, the Sheriff and his deputies patrolled Los Angeles
County on horseback. That tradition continues today with the
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. 130 members
strong, the Posse is made up of Reserve Deputies, Associate
Members (full time sworn personnel) and Civilian Volunteers
who are dedicated to supporting the Sheriff's Department and
their communities.
The Posse is made up of seven units that are located in
Altadena, Industry, Lomita, Palmdale San Dimas, Santa Clarita/
Lost Hills and Temple. Members are extensively trained and fully
equipped to carry out their mission.
Although general law enforcement can only be done by sworn
personnel, the civilian volunteers are the "eyes and ears" of the
Sheriff's Posse and patrol rural and city trails, shopping malls,
parks, beaches, concerts and festivals. The units have also been
trained to assist Search and Rescue. In addition to these duties
the Posse also provides units for ceremonial occasions such as
Color Guards for parades, funerals and formal occasions.
The horse provides an excellent opportunity for adults and youth
alike to interact with law enforcement in a positive way. "Did
anyone ever ask to pet your squad car?" The Posse members
use this relationship to work with kids at the Sheriff's Youth
Activity League, a wonderful opportunity for law enforcement
and kids to spend a day together using the horse as a tool for
learning trust, patience, confidence and building relationships.
You can ask any Posse member about what they do, and they
will all tell you, "I am proud to ride with the Sheriff's Posse!"
