On Friday, December 20, 2013 the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with the Action Committee for Women in Prison Project (ACWIP), delivered over 2000 Christmas packages for women incarcerated at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.
Sheriff Baca said "Although the ACWIP project is in its 14th year of bringing this type of joy to women incarcerated in the prison system during the holiday season, this is the first time that the program has been expanded to include the assembly and delivery of Christmas packages to women housed in our Los Angeles County jail system." The Holiday Gift Bags contained various donated items which included personal sized coffee, tea, candy, hair care items, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, note paper with envelopes, and Christmas cards.
Sheriff Department employees and volunteers conducted a four hour assembly line filling gift bags on Monday, December 16, 2013 as they were joined by community members from various groups and organizations throughout the county such as the Civilian Advisory Committee, Civilian Training Unit, Inmate Reception Center- Document Control Records Clerks, MERIT (Maximizing Education Reaching Individual Transformation) Program Continuum, and The New You Christian Church.
ACWIP Director, Gloria Killian, hopes that the small token of love from the Department and the Community will remind our inmates of the spirit of the season and give them joy and holiday cheer.
