Gary Honings, Captain of West Hollywood Sheriff Station, recently announced his retirement, concluding a 31-year career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. His retirement is effective October 30, 2015.
Captain Honings' career with the Sheriff's Department began in 1984. After graduating from the Sheriff's Training Academy as a Deputy Sheriff with Class #224, his assignments included Pitchess Detention Center-East Facility (formerly PHR Max), Altadena Station and Recruit Training Bureau. Upon his promotion to Sergeant in 1996, Captain Honings was assigned to Pitchess Detention Center-East Facility, followed by West Hollywood Station and the Office of the Undersheriff. Captain Honings was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006 and was assigned to the North County Correctional Facility, West Hollywood Station, and as a Division Chief's Aide at Field Operations Region II Headquarters.
Captain Honings also served in the United States Air Force, California Air National Guard, for 25-years as a Chief Aircrew Member aboard C-130 Hercules aircraft. He visited over 57 different countries around the world, served one tour in Kuwait and one tour in Iraq before retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant.
Captain Honings holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Airfield Management and is presently enrolled in a bachelor's degree completion program at American Military University.
Captain Honings is a 30-year resident of the Antelope Valley. He has two grown sons; one who is an artist and in management, the other who is an Intelligence Analyst in the United States Army. In his spare time, Captain Honings enjoys road cycling, fishing, traveling and cooking.
