September 27, 2016
On Tuesday, September 27, 2016, a dedication ceremony was held to reveal
the renovated area within Men's Central Jail (MCJ), where now stands a
newly stocked library. It was a collaborative effort between the Inmate
Services Bureau - Education Based Incarceration Unit, MCJ staff and a
partnership with community members.
This effort began after a mother used to send books to her son while he
was incarcerated at Men's Central Jail. According to her, she and her
son had in-depth discussions about the books over the phone. Once her
son was released from jail, she contacted the EBI staff at MCJ and shared
her story and vision. She asked if she and her friends could donate books
to the inmates. The library will now provide inmates with access to a wide
range of captivating, high-interest books.
Inmate Services Bureau's Captain Victor Allende, Men's Central Jail's
Captain Agustin Del Valle and EBI staff presented letters of appreciation
and bouquets of flowers to the community members (Sharon Gam, Michele Lynch,
Robin Venturelli, and Hilary Satz) who were responsible for the donation of
over 1000 new library books.
