LASD Exchanges Best Practices with Federal District of Brazil Police Captains

03/10/2013

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department recently had the distinct pleasure of welcoming over 50 Police Captains from the Federal District of Brazil, which includes the capital city of Brasilia. With Brazil set to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics in 2016, the Brazilian police visited the LASD and other law enforcement agencies in the United States to examine unique ways of lowering crime levels and violence.

LASD's Community Law Enforcement Partnership Program met with the visiting Police Captains and shared with them the productivity and utility of volunteers, in addition to the importance of connecting with local community and business leaders. The visitors learned that identifying stakeholders in the community and gaining their trust by listening to their concerns makes policing safer and more effective for police officers in the street.

The police captains also listened to a presentation from Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau Deputy Robert Boese III on the use of Social Media, e-Communications, and the Internet for policing purposes. The visitors were surprised and excited to hear about how LASD uses readily available "new media" to connect with media outlets and the general public.

LASD's own Brazil-born Deputy Eliel Teixeira translated all presentations and subsequent question and answer sessions for the visiting delegation. The delegation was especially delighted to hear Deputy Teixeira share his reasons for wanting to become a Deputy Sheriff with the LASD.
